THE REASON I JUMP wins the Sundance Audience Award

After enjoying a fantastic World Premiere at Sundance 2020, Jerry Rothwell’s THE REASON I JUMP walked away with the festival’s acclaimed World Cinema Documentary Audience Award

THE REASON I JUMP received rave reviews by industry critics following its World Premiere in January at Sundance Film Festival 2020. Screen Daily’s Fionnuala Halligan called the documentary “groundbreaking,” “enormously affecting,” and said the, “film opens up autism like a flower.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Leslie Felperin, meanwhile, said that THE REASON I JUMP was “a work of cinematic alchemy,” and that “Rothwell, the film’s producers, and all their collaborators have found such an elegant, luminous way to pay tribute to the book.”

Audiences seem to agree with critics as by the festival’s close THE REASON I JUMP scooped up the celebrated Audience Award for the World Cinema Documentary category.

The Film

Based on the best-selling book written by a 13-year-old Japanese teenager, THE REASON I JUMP is an immersive film exploring the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. The film blends Higashida’s revelatory insights into autism, written when he was just 13, with intimate portraits of five remarkable young people. It opens a window into an intense and overwhelming, but often joyful, sensory universe. It features state-of-the-art 360 Atmos sound for a heightened sensory experience.
